THE COLORED PENCILS

Most GMs used to do results at least one day a week. Neil used colored pencils on the pieces of paper he used for scoring so that he could more easily identify which points had been scored on a particular date.

The colored pencils were retired after the 1997-1998 season with the advent of the first semi-automated results, and—unofficially—became the first inductee into the DOH Hall of Fame at the first draft banquet, held in Chicago on Oct. 10, 1999.
